The Vinyl Siding Institute has released "The Weather Barrier Statement"

The Weather Barrier Statement

Read the statement at:

The Plastic Man is Worse Than the TinMan

The statement addresse what many have known for years. Vinyl Siding Leaks and the major manufacturers are not covering leaks in their warranties. This statement is a disclosure to everyone that the Vinyl Siding nailed up on the outside of millions of homes is just a "Supplemental Rain Screen."

This statement goes on to state that underlayment must be used to protect the home from
the weather. Essentially, the only real protection from water infiltration is the underlayment (tar paper, tyvek, etc.).

3 years? OK. Yes we are installing Fiber Cement Siding because it is the finest product available and it will last without the problems associated with Vinyl Siding.

Hello. Your comments regardimg vinyl are totally off base. Vinyl was used long before your company existed. It remains on my homes and true, it has its downside, but any material exposed to fire will burn! Good luck! I am sure vinyl will exist for years to come.

Let me guess another Vinyl Siding installer, right?

Vinyl Siding is just as stated and restated "a vertical sieve." It leaks, melts at low temps, moves around (you can't nail it down). It will be around for a long time in the landfills of this country - probably forever.

Thanks for your remarks.

Cool, I can sign in without signing up as a member. Great discussion. I agree that the Vinyl Siding cheapens everything is is installed on and the bit about the tarpaper shack is funny. Fiber Cement Hardie is the only siding to put on your home. It costs less because it still be on the house when you die. You can always change the color in 25 years (with you guy's system). The paint is more for looks and not to protect the product, therefore the paint will last much longer on Fiber Cement. If anyone doubts, take a look at the thin old fiber cement that was asbestos cement tile. Some of that has been up forever and it is still hanging in there. Hardiplank is twice as thick!

I have read your site in detail and you have made me angry but I have given this much thought. I am not happy with my vinyl siding investment and I spent a lot of money two years ago. I did not get the best workmanship but I bought the best vinyl I think. It does not matter now. One day I will remove this stuff and I am going to be real careful about what I install. Just a word to the wise: be real careful about product and contractors.

Thanks

Bill

hERE, hERE, someone has to do it! Tell it like it is! Plastic quick fix is just a coveup measure and folks are not buying it when they buy a new home. Hardiplank is the right product that won't swell, rot, leak. What is this 25 year finish? Sounds too good to be true. One thing I really like is that if you ever get tired of the color, you can paint. The paint lasts forever because the product is stable. I have it on my house and it has held now for 10 years. Keep up the good work.

Help, I painted my siding and it has started warping and buckling. I need help to get my insurance company to cover the damage. I thought I could paint it. I heard that you could paint vinyl siding. I need an estimate for replacement so I can submit it to my insurance company. Please advise.

Thank you,

Demi

Do you think it is right to lay this on your insurance company? I don't know, but your siding could have been warped already and a darker color could be showing the problems with less forgiveness. A darker color may have caused overheating of the vinyl (by the way that is only low 90's for vinyl). I don't mean to be unsympathetic, but vinyl siding is garbage. Please don't reside with it. Vinyl siding is the most expensive siding available today.

You guys are full of it. Vinyl siding works and it is the best for some people that don't have the money to do your fancy stuff.
